if someone's a little grumpy that something they care so much about is being destroyed I can understand that perspective.

But its not being destroyed... what came before is still there... its ok if someone doesn't  like the new direction... but you can still just go back and enjoy what was. It'll always be there.

I hear and see the same thing in the comic universes. Sometimes my favorite titles are messed up royally... so I either just enjoy what I have, find something new, or sometimes you can wait it out and it'll come back around.

Is Trek that different?

Does that last bit mean you used to write those old trek nitpick books? Famous author in our midst???

  No no. I worked on the other big space franchise during The Dark Time between trilogies. We had to come up with character names and explain things like how making the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs makes sense. It got challenging but it was fun.

Yeah what's there is there and always will be, but I think we all want to see the franchise continue. So yeah on one hand you can take or leave the new stuff, but it's that missed opportunity that's disappointing as a fan. We can all wait and hope that we'll eventually get some real Star Trek, but after the JJ Abrams movies and now what this is shaping up to be the future of Star Trek looks very bleak. I'm personally holding out hope that something will rise from the ashes of all of this, but I can't help but recognize the damage that is being done to the brand. At some point Star Trek in spite of its history can become an action brand and the chances of getting good sci-fi from it becomes extremely unlikely. Still hoping for the best one way or another, I guess we'll all find out soon enough.

Just giving in and accepting whatever they decide to put out isn't the way to change any minds. Registering your disgust in words and with your pocket book is the way to change minds. Saying your disappointed one time isnt enough to make a difference.Their seems to be an awful lot of folks upset not only about the direction of this show, but that it's going to be behind a paywall of CBS all access. I personally don't care about the streaming thing, I would pay to see a decent Star Trek show, but I'm not paying for this show.

It hasn't aired yet, and you are already saying it isn't decent Star Trek.

You don't know. None of us know.

You can watch the pilot for free on CBS. Watch it before passing judgement.

of course based on your comments here, I doubt you'll like it regardless.

Everyone says "watch it first" and I get that to a certain extent, but I'm pretty sure the trailer wasn't a total lie.

So the question at this point is can the show somehow overcome the issues we have with what we've seen in the trailer and what's been said of the series. At this point for me it's extremely unlikely. I assume when I watch it and if it turns out to be what I feared I will be criticized for not giving it a chance. The thing is if the show has fundamental core issues we can see those in the trailer. I would be happier than anyone if it turns out to be good sci-fi Star Trek, I really truly hope I'm dead wrong about this series, but I can't blindly pretend it's going to be what I hope it will be.

IMO y'all are spending too much time discussing things with an immovable object whose remarks are openly offensive and betray backward thinking (and not just in this most recent instance). If you don't want a better future where people get along and accept IDIC when there's no harm done to your own agency then Spock help you. There's no room left in my world to tolerate that crap in a forum where I have the control to ignore it. You're dead to me, VF, and going on ignore.

If all this new show accomplishes is to separate Trekkies from prejudiced posers, I'm all for it.

I doubt he will see this since apparently I'm dead to him, but embracing IDIC doesn't mean embracing every whim of people that seem to be mentally ill.

It is indeed. I was mildly excited for The Orville last night, can't even imagine how I'll be feeling when I watch Discovery.

Asked for the day off work, and plan on watching every other pilot just because.

I'm not sure I can get The Orville in the U.K. Yet so that will have to wait but as luck would have it I have the day off on the 25th to watch Discovery.

I'm going to have to watch it several times to take it all in as I'm sure to be overly excited on the first viewing. I'm petrified and excited at the moment because I so want this to be good. A return to a Star Trek where I can sit down and think about the themes explored, the ideas examined and the fun of figuring out how this show begins to connect with wider canon.

The TNG pilot really grabbed you... so did the VOY... DS9 didn't hook me... it took awhile... but then I decided I didn't really get it the first go.  I'm hoping I get hooked.

The beautiful thing about a Star Trek TV series as opposed to a Star Trek movie is that they have the time to make changes to the show as they obtain feedback from viewers and critics. The only Star Trek to come out of the gate with great episodes is the original, which slowly got worse throughout its 3 seasons. The other shows took time to find their feet. It's a lot of trial and error. There will be a lot about Discovery people love and also a lot they hate - the beauty here (unlike with a 2 hour movie and your done) is that everyone wants Star Trek back, in what form though will just be a matter of trial and error.

Personally I still wish they'd paid closer attention to how the BBC brought back Doctor Who. With Trek I think you can draw comparisons with Doctor Who on multiple levels; both shows were born of then 60's, both shows have a long and complex sometimes convoluted and contradictory timeline and universe and both I feel work better as episodic television with broader character arcs being explored in the background throughout each episode.

I think of Star Trek being much in the same vein as Who in that there's a ship called the Enterprise (in who it's the tardis) and a captain (in who it's the Doctor) who commands and leads a crew (companion) to strange new worlds (time and space) etc...

I think Discovery has maybe gone in the wrong direction in terms of its structure, leaning more on serialised storytelling like Game of Thrones, that's the only big worry I have is that it won't have the same aspirational and adventurous quality to it that great Star Trek has always had.

I'm watching Voyager again and I must say I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I can see why it's the one Star Trek show that seems to have a lot of younger Trek fans even today. It's episodic television that has these great character arcs that they dip in and out of. Its not serialised and allows you the freedom to watch it at your own pace, It's such a fluid free thinking show. I'd never really paid Voyager much attention in the 90's but watching it now has made me realise just how much I miss that era of Star Trek. TNG, DS9 and VGR, those were great years and I think the point in which Star Trek had really found its place.

I hope Discovery can reignite that passion for Star Trek that has been somewhat tempered and deflated over the last 10 years. I am worried though.

DS9 definitely is a slow burn, with a lot of world building in its early seasons.

The first time I decided to do a watch through several years ago, I ended up skipping a lot of it and just watching the Dominion stuff.

I am currently rewatching it in its entirety, and man is it good. The first seasons are slow, but aren’t as bad as I remembered, and it’s gotten even better now.

I was an idiot for skipping what I skipped before.

I started watching it after finishing a full rewatch (which was also a first) of TNG, and it is a very different show.

Discovery’s new style is intriguing to me. I loved the lower decks style episodes in the past, and am looking forward to seeing how a show that doesn’t focus on the captain will play out. Hopefully there will be more mystery to the full story.

I just hope that doesn’t mean we won’t get a good amount of Lorca, because I love his actor, and his character intrigues me.

While a new series with a new, or old, Enterprise would have been a good way to bring Trek back, I don’t think Discovery’s way is as long as they handle it well.

Alteran195,... exactly my experience with DS9.

1701D... I think American TV has been taking queues from the BBC... maybe not enough yet!

I never missed a new episode of VOY when it 1st aired... though people do criticize it for all the techno babble... I still think its enjoyable.. but DS9 really did set the tone for the weaving in character and story arcs.

DS9 is shaping up to be my new favorite series. I really like the characters, they feel very realistic to me, and the story is great.

I understand better now why some fans love it, and why some dont.

Looking forward to seeing the Dominon War starting, should be soon since Im halfway through season 4.

Also never realized that they changed the theme song in season 4. I knew the intro was updated, but not the music.

After watching them all from start to finish recently Voyager is my favorite. For me it has more good episode sides than bad and really worked on developing and growing characters over the seasons. DS9 comes in a close second but they tended to go a little heavy handed with the Bajoran stuff for my tastes. TNG comes in last for me. While I enjoyed a lot of episodes from the later seasons the he first couple were really bad. I tend to watch and view Enterprise separate from the rest just because it was a different era and had a different feel to it. I enjoy it for the most part (even some of the xindi stuff).
From everything I've seen of the new show I'm pretty excited for it. Even though it's set between Enterprise and ToS I think it will be a new approach to what we have seen before. Quite frankly, I think Star Trek needs a little revamp to freshen it up some.

DS9
Enterprise
Voyager
TNG
TOS

That’s my order. TNG has some fantastic Episodes, and Picard is probably my favorite captain, but I just never cared about the characters apart from Picard and Data.
