I didn't see a thread for this so I thought I would start one.

Anyone lose playing Star Yrek timelines on iOS? It's pretty fun.

I've sampled it on Android, but I am not sure what to make of it. You tap through text bubbles telling very scant stories and "fight" battles by watching beautifully real-time rendered ships duking it out with no more interaction from me than the occasional power-up icon tap. If you tap the right things (most of the time you'll have no idea what the things you're tapping *actually do* in the game - even after you tap them), then you get a bunch of rewards of various types. What those rewards do (cards or something of various types that apply to different aspects of the game) is unclear.

The stories hint at a deep understanding of Star Trek, and the premise, while a transparent deus ex machina to enable all the characters to interact, is interestingly carried out. All the collectibles, characters, ships, and stories come with blurbs and writing that conforms to canon and mixes things up with the central maguffin authentically.

However, given the incredibly light touch of the actual *gameplay*, coupled with the overly-economical style of telling the stories, I find the game weird, pointless, and emotionally disengaging. Perhaps if I was satisfied by amassing trinkets, it would appeal to me, but I prefer a higher degree of interaction in my games.

In short: Interesting premise, but the story is told in summary and nothing more. If they're going to beautifully render my ship, I'd like to be able to control it somehow.

Wow, that seems like a very convoluted way to say you don't care for it. Lol...

It's pretty simple once you get into it. Yes the story is in small pieces but it is an app game after all. I do like how they have really tried yo capture the nature of each character and really make it feel like Star Trek. You do battles and missions to get items. Those items in turn are used to level up your characters do that you can gain experience to do harder missions. You aren't getting things just for the accumulation of stuff. It all has a purpose.

Bottom line is hat it can be a fun game if you aren't looking for deeper meaning. It has substance if you get into it.

I concur wholeheartedly with that point!

I'm sorry if that seemed convoluted, I felt like giving it a decent review. And I wanted to be clear that there are parts that I like, but that it's hung on a very thin framework of gameplay - doing missions to get stuff to do missions to get stuff, etc, etc... is circular, and that would be great in a game with some sense of involvement with the missions, but there's almost nothing to them.

If it had more meat to it, it could be a great game. All I ask is an option to manually control the ship during battles, that's all it needs! And that's not a big ask, given what they've already got implemented:

-Real-Time 3D rendered ships

-Rather nice graphics engine doing the rendering

-Weapons, shields, and explosion/damage mechanics

-Visual effects for same.

It's literally a just bit of GUI, HCI, physics, and maybe a bit of simple AI scripting, I might have been able to handle that myself for a college project 10 years ago (too rusty now).

It's not difficult to do, so its disinclusion sort of makes me feel like the feature was deemed "too much, too intense for a mobile game" or something. It even feels a little bit patronising to demote expectations for what mobile gamers can handle like that.

Perhaps I'm just sour because my favourite Star Trek games let you fly the ship around yourself (A Final Unity, Klingon Academy, Bridge Commander...), and it feels like a cheat to have such lovely looking ships with nothing more to do than a swipe the screen to orbit the camera around the ship...

I might be OK with the story vagueness if the missions were more interesting to play.

Got long-winded again. I like to discuss stuff. Not sure I would have said anything different if I was sober right now.

I'd play it if I could pilot the ship.

It's only a cash sink if you buy the premium stuff which you do not have to do to enjoy the game. I to agree that being able to fly the ship would be cool. Maybe in an update.

If you want to have more characters at some point you have to spend money to get more openings. Do we have a fleet up and running?

I've started one but don't have any members just yet. That's one of the reasons I wanted to see if anyone was playing here,

Look for: Attack Wing Beta
Leader: Captain Blanco

I know people think you have to put a lot of money into this fame to enjoy it but you really don't. I have multiple ships that I got without spending a dime. Including the ToS Enterprise and HMS Bounty. There is a Dabo wheel that refreshes every 24 hrs and you can get ship schematics every now and then as a prize. You just need to keep playing. I did end up spending ten bucks on the game recently to do some upgrades because I didn't want to wait. Lol. Oh and you can buy extra crew spaces with credits you win in the game. Without spending real money.

I do and I can't really figure out why lol. I get sucked in and spend money like a drunken sailor. Guess they knew what buttons to push for consumers like me.

Are you still in that fleet?

I created it for people here that we're playing but as of yet, I am the only one in it. Lol.

There have been quite a few changes. Some to the overall layout and missions. A few mods to the ship battles (you still can't actually control the ships). The stories are fun. Power ups for characters are a bit different now too.
