Thats a pretty harsh assessment being how little he was on the screen. I couldnt disagree with you more. Scott's character on TOS especially in the first season was just downright boring and really didnt have much impact. His personailty really came out in the TOS movies and thats the Scotty that most people love today. The great thing I think this movie is able to do is skip all the fleshing out of the characters that we saw in TOS (I just got done watching TOS season 1 and I was far from impressed by most of it) and move right into all the character traits that we know and love. I thought this new Scotty was perfectly done because it captured what I thought Scotty should be even if it was slightly over the top at very few times.

That's exactly how I feel about it. They gave Scotty the personality he had in the original movies. And that's a goot thing, because in the original series he was just another guy and his only real feat was that he survived for over 3 years in a red shirt. However, the Scotty from the movies is the one we all love.

I think Scotty had some good personality stuff going on in the TOS , i still chuckle when i think of him trying to get someone drunk, and when they asked what it was he was drinking, he said after looking at the bottle and thinking a little "Its green!". Scotty did get to shine more in the movies but i think he was great in the TOS too.

The biggest casualty in this whole reimagining is Scotty. He has basically been reduced to the Jar Jar Binks of Trekdom. Once the trusted third in command, the one Kirk gladly left the keys to the ship as he and Spock and McCoy got into trouble planetside, Scotty is now comic relief. Sure Scotty was always good for a laugh with too much scotch, but this is Montgomery plain sober, but Scotty in the past was one of the wisest, one of the best military tacticians Kirk had. Now sadly he is the court jester, the buffoon, not the rock that kept the Enterprise the finest ship in the fleet. For this I am saddest.

Absolutely correct. Every movie nowadays seems to need their Jar Jar or character that harkens back to Pokemon. Scotty was one of those instances in this film. A shame really. In the original show Scotty was funny but also serious. He was more of a force to be reckoned with, in this movie it is obvious he is the court jester. Everything from his Willa Wonka adventure through the Enterprise "engineering" or was that its plumbing system to his cleaning of his ear when Chekov is describing what to do.
