I'm going to finally be getting into the BluRay game myself... and believe it or not, we're debating on the 3-D thing as well. It's pretty much the same cost to do 3D as it is for a decent TV it seems. If so, I'd love for them to release "Friday the 13th Part 3" in 3D for the home.. *that* would kick ass! wink.gif

As an owner of 3D blu-ray via Sony, let me just say it's amazing.

I hear rumor of the glassless system coming, but the glasses add that 3D charm for me.

My only regret ... the limited selection of movies. It's getting better though.

I initially purchased the Toshiba HD-DVD player thinking that they would win over Blu-Ray (years back, initial rumors were that Walmart would sell exclusively only HD-DVD players and that would put the nail in the coffin for blu-ray ... boy, was that wrong)

By the way, also, I REALLY wanted that free mail-in promo TOS Phaser remote control that was offered with the HD-DVD purchase ... but much to my dismay, this was NOT available/offered to Canadian residence (damn).

A couples of years thereafter, I bit the bullet and got a PS3 blu-ray player. I do have the complete TOS episode on blu-ray but still have yet to play them,
... still watching most of the rented movies via standard DVD player, though.

We've been looking at a Samsung 3D as a possibility.. but have been told by two friends now that Samsung products break down a lot more than others. What swayed you to Sony, if I may ask..?

3D really isn't that much more expensive than the TV's themselves. It's the glasses that cost you.. but it seems there are a lot of bundle packages now.

I've got a HD TV but no blu-ray as yet. Actually, my Panasonic TV is so good that it makes ordinary DVD pictures look near blu-ray standard. I won't look to move to blu-ray until my old DVD player breaks down because the Blu-ray I've seen demonstrated in shops isn't that much better than I can get on my TV now.

As for 3D TV, I'll wait until those glasses aren't needed and there are a lot of 3D films and TV channels.

Sony has always been a brand of choice for me ... so I am biased. No real reason to do it, but I wasn't disappointed either. The picture is so clear and beautiful, the 3D effects are breathtaking.

There may be a difference between the models available in the US and the UK. Over here, we almost never buy any appliance withiout consulting the consumer magazines which give reports of consumer tests. In the UK, Panasonic win hands down right through the entire price range - especially in terms of picture quality. My dad owns a 40 inch Sony HD TV and we've never rated his HD picture which is much worse - believe it or not - than our standard digital piture (the UK went entirely digital and turned off its analogue transmissions last year), and he is very impressed with our 32 inch panel TV. It may be that some makes don't do so well on the larger screen sizes, but we're amazed at how much better our picture is and our HD has amazing clarity. It's hard to see how it could be bettered, even with blu-ray DVD because our standard DVD play back is excellent quality. The only thing that could be improved is the addition of cinema sound because panel TVs don't have the greatest sound due to the tiny speakers that have to fit in with the overall slim design. I wonder if 3D TVs won't initally at last suffer a loss in picture clarity.

well for any hd tv you also have to take into consideration the size of the room. bigger is not always better if the viewing area between yourself and the screen is small. i received a vizio 42" last year for christmas and couldnt belive how much better it was from the phillips i purchased 4 years ago!

I think advances in TV pictures is ongoing. That's why we don't tend to buy equipment until it's been out a few years. Early models of any kind are usually of less good quality than later ones. I remember the early colour TVs in this country and VHS VCRs which had terrible picture quality. The earliest big TVs were very had a very poor picture quality. Even now some brands can't make a decent large screen picture. I agree that the size of room is important and a big TV in a small room is just going to show the picture quality to its worst advantage if the picture is not good to begine with. We chose a 32" screen because our lounge is quite small. However, I was in PC World not so long ago and saw a ginormous TV with the most incredibly sharp HD/Blu-Ray picture. The screen had to be at least 42" and it was equal to ours.
