Here is an interview with one of the writters for the new Trek movie. The interview is about the upcoming transformers mivie but they do talk Trek about half way through.

He sounds very excited and I liked that he said they are big fans and have read the novels. I think this is in good hands and look forward to hearing more when SDCC gets here.

Well it looks like the actor that plays Sylar (Zachary Quinto) on "Heroes" has been cast as Spock in the upcomiong Star Trek movie. Also It has been confirmed that Leonard Nimoy is going to be playing the Older Spock. Not a bad castin job if you ask me.

I was wondering why Nimoy, but not Shatner, was gonna be in it and then it dawned on me... with Spock, you can make it ANY time period with an older Spock telling someone about his younger days. It would be nice if he was telling someone familiar to us... from the 24th century.

Plus, IF this movie will be part of established canon, how do you explaine a Kirk that looks 15 years older than he did when he died?

Quinto doesn't excite me at all. I was hoping for a talented unknown, not somebody already familiar to the public. Although I am pleased to see the proper Spock making an appearance ~ and it would be cool if he were in a post-Nemesis scenario on Romulus, I think not shoehorning Shatner into this movie could well lead to a whole bunch of trekkers boycotting it ~ whether Kirk is "dead" or not.

Personally, I am coming round to hoping that this movie junks existing canon and starts over again......anything than another boring remake, and the same old TOS look.

The film looks promicing to me. And the guy they've got to play young spock looks the part. I'm sure he can act the part. We'll just have to wait and see who is going to be Kirk...

That's really just about the best anyone can do with this. Promising? I honestly don't know. I'm not a fan of Abrams. I find most mainstream blockbuster movies childish and lacking subtley. I can mostly only talk about what I'm not feeling and that is excited.

I looked through some pics of this quinto guy, and he resmebles to some extent a young Nimoy, but i cant remember ever having seen him act, so i dont know if he has the presence, talent and voice to pull off a convincing Spock. I am very pleased to hear that Leonard Nimoy is retuning for at least an appearance as older Spock. That gives me at least some hope that this project isnt throwing everything we hold dear out the window in an attempt to attract new audiences. I am still very hesitant about this movie project, and until we start getting more info about it and start seeing clips or whatever i will remain nervous that this could make a new beginning for Star Trek or break the franchise altogether.

That may be true but I dont believe te fan base is as wide and all powerefull as many think it is these days. I think there are more that are open minded then there are of the ones that just want to complain and boycot.

^^^I don't think it's entirely fair to say that people "want" to complain or boycott, because that rather implies that they want to do that just for the sake of it. I don't see that at all, what I do see is a number of fans who are unhappy that the Star Trek franchise may be getting the same treatment as has been meeted out to other TV franchises of the 60s and 70s ~ treatment that has had decidedly mixed results. They are asking pertinent questions as to exactly why certain decisions regarding trying to "save" this franchise have been made, and the answers they are coming up with ~ in the absence of much solid information from Mr Abrams ~ doesn't make pretty reading, and ought to be of concern to all existing Trek fans.

Despite appearances, I am pretty agnostic about this whole venture, but I have to say that I am suspicious that this is just a prettied-up, CGI-ridden, and ultimately dumbed-down TOS to entice feckless youngsters to buy into Trek and all the inevitable merchandise that will result from a successful run of movies. As to whether that is ultimately good for the reputation of TV's most long-lived and respected sci-fi show is something everyone ought to think about. I've been thinking about it for a while.

As for the fanbase, it amuses me when people claim it is shrinking and toothless, for it is neither. The fanbase isn't shrinking, and support for Treks prior to Nemesis and Enterprise is as strong as ever. For a variety of reasons the examples cited were not deemed by a significant portion of the fanbase to be not up to standard and they voted with their feet by not supporting them. This is not to say that these fans deserted Trek altogether or stopped caring about it. Paramount got a bloodied nose and in desperation not to loose their big cash cow they've taken a gamble that Trekkers are so bereft at not having any new Trek to look forward to and TOS being so iconic, that they can serve up what may only turn out to be a warmed-over concept with younger actors trying to fill very big boots and perhaps nobody will notice ~ at least not the teenyboppers they hope will expand the fanbase. However, if Trekkers in large enough quantities further down the line (as more news dribbles out) decide that they don't fancy it and effectively do decide to boycott it, then it's going to be hard to float a Star Trek movie that the fans have turned their backs on. If Abrams can't make enough Trekkers like this enough to see it on the all-important opening weeked, who on Earth will?

As for those who are open-minded, maybe they don't care enough either way to express and opinion on the internet, but from what I am seeing, this movie has pretty much divided the fanbase already. I even got some flack from a rabid "anti" over at TU for starting a thread asking what would make people go and watch this movie (as opposed to constantly citing what woudn't), and was accused of trying to pave the way for making my "excuses" come 2008 when I "decide" that I will go and see this movie! Of course, that is utter BS, I don't need to excuse myself either way, but it just gives you an idea of the depth of feeling out there, and I have a nasty feeling that is this movie succeeds because people thought that it might be worth the price of a cinema ticket, they'll be branded as "traitors" to the "true" Trek, and if it bombs then we'll have a repeat of Enterprise fans accusing everyone else of "killing" the franchise off.

Really, it's a matter of personal choice in the end. I'm just wating for Abrams to tell me something to get me excited because right now ~ amd for the last year or so ~ I've been feeling decidedly ho-hum!
