Looking at the figures and packaging from the 2009 Star Trek movie playmates figures through the eyes of a kid, especially one that may not have seen the movie, i caqn see where they might look lame.

I think your right. Change takes time and I think it's time that people need to digest Star Trek rather than it being shoved down their throats week in week out. As a fan of anything Star Trek I know I could do with a break from episodic TV for a while at the moment.
It kind of gets a bit like chocolate.... if you stuff your face with chocolate, week in week out, your gonna be ill and not want Chocolate for a while (speaking from experience!!)

The truth is Trek is entertainment and it wasn't entertaining a big enough crowd during the late 90's early 00's. If trek keeps reinventing itself (like the 2009 movie has done) then your going to get people who are turned off by it, but as long as the new blood do it right, you'll always get more people in to fill the empty places.
As far as "Star Trek's" impact, again it goes back to giving it time. But for a franchise that many considered to be completely ridiculous, dead and to have such a famous stigma attached to it during and after Enterprise Insurrection and Nemesis, for it to have done that well and from my experience, being still talked about at work, in the media and University even now and for the sequel to be highly anticipated - is unprecedented in Star Trek of the last 25 years. Everyone will have different experiences though so we can't be sure one way or the other as to Star Trek's sustained popularity but going by other big-budget and popular summer blockbusters - usually the sequel does better even if the movie isn't as good as the first. Read into that what you will.

I think the packaging was very lame compared to nearly every other summer movie toy line.

Star Trek did reinvent itself with the 2009 movie. Whether or not that was a good reinvention or not depends on your POV. I think it was not a good movie, and not good for the Trek franchise as a whole, but we can just agree to disagree on that one. The fundamental flaw though is that we keep looking at this through the eyes of what's good for toy licensing. Was that even a consideration for them? Was that the point when they did the reboot? I suspect Paramount is much more myopic when it looks at this and really cares about two questions: How much did it gross in the US? How much did it gross abroad? ... I wouldn't be surprised if licensing is just one of many incidental money-making opportunities on the far back burner by comparison. If they were really geared toward growing the licensing of the franchise, they'd probably have already tried making their own version of the "Clone Wars" cartoon by now.

I would be willing to bet that Paramount/CBS are going to get the next two films out to complete a trilogy, and are gonna be developing a new live action series in no time. Something that relies less on techno babble and negotiation, and something that is more space cowboy, shootem' up , action adventure, in order to draw in the new fans from the films, and people who never thought of watching trek before. I just hope that like TOS, and TNG they have some stories that'll relect the human condition and speaks out about the issues we face today , instead of, ugly aliens are trying to destroy us so we blow em' up real good type thing. lol

They need a nice balance of the human condition, morality tales (although nothing so blatant as the TNG episode of Warp affecting space environment-sheesh) and action. They also need to bring some integrity back into the show. Although Star Trek pushed the boundaries of sexuality it never was so blatant as Tpol ass shots, Seven of 9 boob shots, and the "pretty people" casting of the last film. Get to the heart of Star Trek which used to be about integrity, wrap it up in fun and they'll be in good shape.

I agree. Enterprise began well but ended up sucking out all the integrity that had underpinned the franchise. I'm not so convinced by your argument that the new cast is all "pretty people" - I don't think Simon Pegg and Karl Urban hit the heights of hotness, but I think there needs to be more female characters in the next movie, or at least get Uhura doing her job and dump the silly romance with Spock.
Frankly, I don't think we'll see another Tv series for a long time, and when it happens it's going the have a lot of catching up to do in order to surpass the standard of NuBSG which is the new textbook on how to make engaging and inclusive adult Sci-fi on TV. Anyone who thinks they're up to th challenge of producing a new Star Trek for TV is also going to have to look at how well the crew reflect the diversity of today's society.

Well the easy answer is: Hire Shatner for the next film!
If they were to go to another TV series thats not animated I like Alex's idea of the prime universe. However, my take would be a bit different. I always thought a Starfleet Command show would be pretty cool that is more of a drama and deals with the new politics of universe. I think you could do some real morality tales given how many people view the various governments around the real world and incorporate "ripped from the headlines" type issues. You could also integrate action into the program using the entire fleet as opposed to a single ship. I also think guest spots would be a much easier transition given that your not limited to one ship or one station. I also think you could make the Trek universe a little more gritty/dirty without really going back on the ideal nature that has been presented before. Backroom deals, assasinations, moral command staff fighting against it all...I think it all makes for compelling storytelling that could use elements of BSG without actually ripping off BSG.
