I've honestly found very few movies where the Blu-ray transfer looks that much better then the DVD transfer. Not saying the blu-ray isn't superior, because it is, but when I play a normal DVD back through my receiver, which filters and upscales the DVD, the result is spectacular and while the Blu-Ray has an edge and looks a bit better, it's rarely that much better to me.

Part of this is simply the fact the most movies don't really require high-def to enjoy them, and that includes movies with lots of specialal effects  where the action is  so fast paced and is specifically shot in a "choppy" manner.

Movies that I've found to be an exception include Blade Runner, and Avatar. Also, those Blu-Rays like "The planet earth" look amazing.

Star Trek TNG on bluray looks great to me, i think much better that the Dvds did. I think the quality of your bluray player may make a difference in upscaling Dvds too. I have never regretted buying bluray, and i agree that "Planet Earth" is breathtaking in bluray! I have been disappointed by some bluray movies because of a rush to puut it out on bluray without remastering the original and cleaning it up.

Looks like next tuesday is Into Darkness day. Walmart is selling a 2 pack including the 2009 movie. Every Walmart ive been to since 2009 seems to be clogged with the 2009 movie on the shelf. Its never been reduced or thrown into the bargain bin. Somehow they want to sell the shelfwarmers. I think they are also giving away a toy ship with another version they are selling. Best buy gave away the Bluray 2009 movie when you bought the Star Trek video game. There must be a warehouse with 10 billion copies of the 2009 movie that need to be disposed of. Maybe they will put them on cereal boxes next. Anyone remember the Star Trek cereal from the 2009 movie?

When they re-master and re-do the effects, like they did with TOS and TNG, I agree, that looks much better in High Def. And your correct, the quality of the upscaling in my equipment is excellent. When I buy a DVD, I typically rip it and it goes on a 8.5 TB NAS. I use a Media player connected to an A/V receiver that both take the raw MP2 DVD source, stream it, filter it, upscale it and by the time it hits my TV it looks great.  Likewise my Blu-ray player filers and upscales as good as the media player, so if I play the DVD direct, it still looks great.

If I watch the raw DVD next to my ripped result, the lack of quality is very noticeable. I can't argue that you get a cleaner crisper signal out of the blu-ray, but for me, the final effect of the filtering and up scaling is so negligible for most movies that I never pay the extra 30 cents at Red Box to rent the Blu-ray over the plain DVD.

Take for example a movie that just came out, "Now you see me" a fun movie, but not a heck of a lot that would look that much better in Blu-ray over the DVD.

I think the lack of a meaningful amount of special features content shows the disinterest Abrams had with this movie. Even though it was a year later than it was supposed to be, i still feel like it was a bit rushed , chiefly because Abrams has so much on his plate. No deleted scenes, no multiperson commentary and the non original storyline that was awful in my opinion make me think that it was a rush job. Apparently the featurettes are very short as well. Between Abrams disinterest and CBS/Paramounts marketing schemes to make up for the disappointing take at the box office, Star Trek fans are on the losing end.

Oh yeah Avatar looks AMAZING on an HD TV and with Blu-ray, the colors are SO vibrant and crystal clear. The first Blu-ray I bought even before i had a Blu-ray player. I KNEW I wouldn't watch that movie until I saw it in HD. So it sat there for like a few months unopened until I got a Blu-ray to play it and watch it for the first time.

Well, "free" for about $30 more than the phaser should cost!

I still have 2 unopened boxes of the 2009 Star Trek cereal too.  I don't suppose it's worth anything.

So, how about the blatantly incorrect saucer registry on the standard 3D release cover art?  Wonder how that happens.

I still have 2 unopened boxes of the 2009 Star Trek cereal too.  I don't suppose it's worth anything.

There are two listings on eBay for the empty box right now for $8.95 and $14.96.  Not that they're going to sell... Found none in sold listings.  I have a couple in storage along with everything else related to the 09 movie.  That cereal was actually decent, I would eat more of it if it was still around.  Not sure I would eat yours though.  But in 2004 this guy ate a box of Urkel-O's from 1991.  His "Steve, Don't Eat It!" blog is pretty hilarious.

Well i decided to buy the Into darkness movie since it was on sale at Best buy. I watched it with some family and i believe i liked it better this time. Seeing movies at home on a smaller screen seem to bring more clarity to whats going on. Being that it is an alternate timeline, i can see how Khans ship could have been discovered earlier, and his abilities utilized by a paranoid Commander of Starfleet. Kirk still seems to be in over his head, not ready to be Captain. I still couldnt see a reason why the Enterprise had to be under water instead of in orbit around the planet at the beginning of the movie. Cumberbatch was a decent choice for Khan, but he was no Ricardo Montalban. I think Bruce Greenwood was the best actor in the movie. I am not crazy about the Klingon's new look. Alice Eve was nice eyecandy. The Kirk death scene should have been left out, it lacked the meaningfulness , power and finality of the TWOK Spock death scene. I enjoyed the second watching of the movie, but i hope the next movie gets away from conspiracies and gets back to exploration.

I decided to breakdown and buy the standard DVD version of the film from Wal-Mart the other night. I think I like it better on the small screen in the 2D format as opposed to Real D 3D which I saw in the theater. Call me old fashioned. lol :P

I keep trying to re-watch the 2009 movie which is arguably better, and I can never get through it. I typically make it where Nero blows up Vulcan, and by that point its just all gone so wrong and silly to me I actually loose interest.

Since I can't get through that one, I haven't attempted to watch TWOK Redux  on the small screen.
