I think Star Wars has and will always be just movies to sell more toys, the classics are classics because no one had seen anything like it before, since Jedi though the Star Wars formula is a tried and tested one used by everyone. Star Wars has survived by pandering to its fans, kids and the power of the brand. The only thing we should be amazed at looking at the Star Wars machine is how well it's been kept running as a product but as an entertainment property, well lets just say I think the house of mouse is the perfect place for it. So regardless of Abrams directing, he still has to follow a laundry list of things Lucas wrote in his treatment. He still has Lucas to impress and you never know Abrams may do a good job, certainly Episode 7 will be huge huge huge but better than the prequels? I think some fans are going to be hugely disappointed. Everyone seems to think Abrams will do to Wars as he did to Trek, he will not, it's a totally different universe with a totally new set of rules, the studio, Lucas, Kennedy will all be down his back making sure he follows their vision and their idea of what Star Wars should be, sure all this will bolster Abrams public profile but I can't help but feel he's taken a step back in his career, yes he's a Star Wars fan and I don't blame him for wanting to do it but when your given free reign over Star Trek, not the smallest of franchises, to with it as you see fit, and then go do a job where your only going to be a very small cog in a very large merchandising machine, it seems a bit weird for a guy like Abrams to go and make that choice, regardless of his feelings for Star Wars.

More to the point, Star Wars will never be as good as its original trilogy is remembered to be.

Ok so I guess a lot of people have now seen the news about JJ Abrams betraying every single Star Trek fan to run off and do Lucas's bidding... As you can see, I am THRILLED by this news... NOT

What does everyone else think? Good news? Bad news? Not really that important news?
I think this is good news in the long term, but bad news in the short term. For Trek, it likely means that the third film in the JJ

Yeah... I'm still not sold on JJ as an actual good director. I find it interesting that on his IMDB page, his billing is as " Producer | Writer | Music Department " not "Director".

To-date, Star Trek and Super 8 have been his only big screen director gigs. Everything else has been TV, and honestly, outside of the Start Trek Movie, I don't care for anything else he's directed.

I think he fancies himself more of a producer.... but frankly, I don't really dig much of anything he's produced either.

I think JJ Abrams is a great director but aside from Star Trek his movies can be slightly forgettable. Super 8, Cloverfield (although only a Produceron Clover) I mean you forgot to mention he directed MI:III!

Star Trek reminded me of Jurassic Park in the way that just as it was awesome to see Dinosaurs done like that in 1993 it was such a huge and pleasent surprise to see a Star Trek movie done with such style and epicness but the reason I feel Star Trek (2009) is so memorable is because it's not just Abrams work that went into it... It's Gene Roddenberry's, it's Rick Berman's, Ira Bher, Michael Pillar, Ronnald D Moore, Branon Braga's, it's countless people's hard work over nearly 50 years that have gone into it to make it such a myth so that all Abrams had to do was to make all of that relevant.

I can't see him having the same success with Star Wars and I can only see him doing this one movie. Sure we all know before a frame has been shot that Episode 7 will do big numbers but I don't think it's going to be as memorable or as significant as JJ Abrams Star Trek movie because of the nature of Star Wars vs the nature of Star Trek - Star Wars is style over substance when the majority of Star Trek is substance over style which for Star Trek as a result of Abrams has been merged closer and it's with that merging that I feel his influence over Star Trek will be far more important and influential than his Star Wars movie which to all sense and purpous will just serve to sell more toys to oblivious kids.

Star Wars may have been something never seen before and subsiquently changed the way directors direct and studios merchandise movies including Star Trek but there's nothing original about the storytelling nor is there anything of any substance within that one story whereas Star Trek changed the world.

That is pretty much how I feel. Abrams obviously has a very creative imagination, but he's better as a conceptualist rather than a director or even a producer. I'm not impressed with the stuff he's done to full term, notably Star Trek, and it seems like he'll only stay attached to producing something until he realizes he doesn't know how to twist the story anymore. Then he just hands it off to people that are left scrambling like Lost. Abrams, to me, is the new Shyamalan, but so far he's only achieved Unbreakable at best, and has yet to get his Sixth Sense.

Star Wars might fare better since there are a lot of aspects about his Star Trek movie that would be far more suiting in a Star Wars setting, but story and characters could still suffer greatly.

Again, only my opinion, not meaning to offend/sway anyone, but whereas I don't think JJ was good for Star Trek, I think he'll do a ton of cool stuff for Star Wars.
His statements in the press regards Star Trek have generally been along the lines of, "I'm not making it for the fans," whereas with Star Wars, he's already said he's aiming for it to be held in the same esteem as the original three films, and how those movies influenced him when growing up, etc.

That's probably about right. After Unbreakable and Sixth Sense, Sham-a-lang-a-bing-bang stuff is all the same... very derivative and just a waste of my time. He's on my "Don't watch even if its free" list. I'm pretty sure the last air bender dukes it out With Gigli as some of the worst cinema of all time!

So according to George Takei's FAcebook he's been cast in the new SW movie...now that could be just an April Fools Trick but if its legit that would be kinda crazy.
