Nimoy refused to reprise his role unless the complete cast was rehired. I don't think Shatner would have done such a thing for anyone.
My speculation is that hiring the complete cast was deemed too expencive. So I guess they made the compromise of hiring all of them except for Koenig (who was in only 2 of the 3 TOS vseasons) and offered Koenig to write an episode instead. But as I said, this is speculation.

That man doesn't have the best reputation.
Though I don't know anything much about it, I know he said "Get a life" to fans...& then wrote a book by the same name (I think).
Could I get a tiny bit of insight on that? as in where he said it & why. (sorry for the OT)

Shatner made the statement 'Get a Life" on a episode of Saturday night Live in a parody of a Star Trek convention. That was back in the early 80's i believe.

The good thing about him is that he seems to use his reputation to make people laugh. As if he doesn't mind at all. Just look at the way he plays himself in Showtime. Especially the subtile in-joke having Shatner call DeNiro the worst actor he's ever seen! Man, I almost died seeing that.
I don't think Shatner is all bad. I mean, let's face it. If he was really the jurk his reputation makes him, he would never have accepted that part in Showtime.
