The Martian opened to really good critical reviews and acclaim.

So I went to see it today, and as a Riddley Scott fan... Of late i was thinking he's had a few misses.

This is not one of them.

Riddley, I true form has created something that is as visually satisfying as its story. This was really good science fiction... And it felt as close to a really good Star Trek adventure as I've seen in ages.

Goth, could you expand on that? I've seen a lot of people saying it's great, but I don't have the foggiest idea what it's about. Is it along the lines of Apollo 13 (realistic emergency type situation), or does it involve aliens or something?

I'm fine with spoilers by the way, just use the spoiler tags to hide them ( [spoil er] and [/spoil er] with the spaces removed :) ).

Sure!

I wouldn't say it's in the vein of Apollo 13 out right, though their are elements of the mission turned to a rescue operation.

It's probably more like a Robinson Caruso crossed with Apollo 13.

No aliens, the science is all very sound. It's not an action adventure type movie, rather one of pitting the human condition against insurmountable odds to survive.

I was right with matts character for the wins and losses he faces... The ups and downs.

The supporting cast is wonderful and they do their job w/o overshadowing Damon's performance.

There are a few gafs, but nothing like Gravity, which IMO went overboard... And not nearly as "preachy" as something like interstellar.

I got to see this over the weekend and absolutely loved it. The heart and humor combined with suspense and fun made this movie. Top notch performances by everyone. I can't say enough good things about it.

In film form, I thought this was a more coherent, crowd-pleasing version of "Red Planet" (too many plot similarities to count), but the amount of cheese that it was served up with was slightly excessive. There's positive and upbeat, and then there's cheese.

The ship storyline of "Red Planet" was better executed and filmed than the ship storyline in "The Martian," I thought.

I just saw it tonight.  I thought it was really good.  Excellent performances, good visuals and generally believable science (not that I'm a scientist at all).

Yeah, its not perfect, but I thought it was every bit the 80/100 score it got on metacritic.

Other than the fact that they are on Mars... I didn't think there was much in common to Red Planet... but its been awhile since I saw that movie!

I do agree the rational for the emergency launch seemed a bit forced.

Red Planet vs The Martian with some minor spoilers:
Spoiler

I wrote a long and gushing review of The Martian over on my blog. In short, I loved the book, and the movie is like a distillation of many of my mental images while reading the book. There are a few differences in the designs and some hollywood over-inflation, but it's largely as if Ridley Scott plugged a HDMI cable into my brain. The movie is a space-science geek's wet-dream.

I do agree the rational for the emergency launch seemed a bit forced.

Andy Weir usually prefaces his public engagement with any scientifically literate crowd by admitting that the sandstorm was impossibly powerful, and that given Mars' 1% atmospheric pressure compared to Earth, even a sustained several-hundred-kilometer-per-hour storm wind would feel like a gentle breeze.

Fair enough! I just took it in stride as a necessary plot device needed to setup the actual story.

Which is exactly how Weir excuses it. I allow it :P

I once dated someone who asked, while watching Contact, "did this actually happen?"  At that moment I knew it would not last.  :P
