The two films news is good news because they can't both be in the Kelvin universe, right?

I really hope they give the Kelvin universe a rest and do something that's not about any Enterprise crew, that doesn't have a Sarek cameo (just leave the dude alone, jeez), and doesn't have the Enterprise underwater for some bogus reason, or underground, and is generally less Marvel-Universy.

Hopefully the expected success of "Rogue One" and "Solo: A Star Wars Story" will give the studio some measure of bravery to branch out into standalone pieces that don't deal with ::sigh:: Kirk or Spock or Sarek.

I'm always skeptical if they can make a decent trek movie...but the one thing QT has going for him is he likes dialog and setting things up in a smart way, and I think that would transfer well to Star Trek.

One thing that concerns me is that he's on record saying he'd love to do a feature film adaptation of a classic episode. They essentially tried that with Into Darkness and it bled ticket sales for Beyond.

Plus, if Tarantino wants to do a classic episode, will he use the Kelvinverse cast?

He also expressed interest in adapting an episode from TNG but that cast isn't getting any younger. Patrick Stewart is 77 and Wil Wheaton is 45. Though I have to admit a Tarantino flick with just those two trekking through space could be pretty epic.

I guess I see TWOK  as an adaptation of a classic episode... where as into darkness was a more of remake of a Classic Movie... being TWOK.

If Tarantino has an idea that might flesh out an episode like TWOK did, that might be ok... and I think thats kinda what hard core trek fans have been asking for.

For me, TWOK is simply a sequel to "Space Seed." Into Darkness is Abrams' attempt to have his cake and eat it, too, by cherry picking elements from both and shoving them into the Kelvinverse.

I think that movie would have worked better as a reimagining of "Space Seed" featuring John Harrison, revealing Ricardo Montalban's Khan still in his stasis tube at the end of the movie.

This was rumored a long time ago, wouldn't surprise me if they end up going this way with one of the movies.

I'm not sure why I should care... or be interested in such a story?

True. I do like him... I suppose, as with most things, I should wait and see what they do and decide then, its just not a plot that excites me.

All I'm thinking about with the next film is what will happen to the shop now.
1st film-Damaged
2nd film-Nearly destroyed
3rd film-Destroyed
4th film-?Completely vaporised?

The only movies where the Enterprise isnt damaged or destroyed is TMP, and Final Frontier.

It wasnt even in Voyager Home except for a couple seconds at the end.

The new movies arent really doing much different in terms of ship damage.

This is how I see it.
As you said there was no damage in TMP and FF.
ST3 is a continuation of the damage in ST 2 and it's destruction links to that.
ST6 was damaged and then retired but other than the hole through the saucer wasn't too bad visibly.
Generations destroyed obviously
First Contact you don't see any external damage that I remember, same with Insurrection.
Nemesis was heavy damage.

With the new films the ship is damaged, repaired, damaged again, repaired again then destroyed. It seems to me that they like seeing how damaged they can get the ship in the films and are getting more extreme each time. Guess that because of advances with CGI they are making full use of it.
The workers who have to fix the ship each time must either hate the crew for how much extra work they have or love them for keeping them employed.

TMP - No damage that I remember

TWOK - Heavy damage by Kahn/Reliant

TSFS - More damage from the Klingons, then destroyed

TVH - Not there

TFF - None that I remember, maybe they were attacked by the Klingons but no idea

TUC - Pretty badly damaged by the Bird of Prey, it took quite a few torpedo hits and there was more than the one hole

Generations - The B took heavy damage from the Ribbon, and the D was destroyed

First Contact - Heavy internal damage by the Borg

Insurection - Took a beating from the So'na

Nemesis - Heavy damage by the Scimitar

2009 - Not really that badly damaged, no worse than TWOK or TUC

Into Darkness - Heavy damage

Beyond - Destroyed

I'd say its the advances in CGI tech. Its way easier to show good damage on a ship now than it was on a physical model.

Yeah... you kind of expect in the films they will have damage... its when they they destroy it that kinda gets old for me... TSFS seems like one of the few times it was really embedded in the plot for good purpose.

Hopefully the next film will use CGI to illustrate more effective shields.

The new movies arent really doing much different in terms of ship damage.

The difference is... the Refit and the E-D had history. We knew them from the show. We knew what they were capable off. They were "our" homes for quite a while. Loosing them meant something. Loosing the Refit was like loosing one of the characters. And though I prefer the E-E's design, I was sad seeing the E-D go. The Abrams-Prise does not have that. She did not even get a chance to shine, no heroic moment. She just went out with a whimper. They can damage the ship as much as they want, and it may look great, but in the end, it's just eye-candy and nothing that wakes emotions. And that's a bit... unfortunate.

(to be fair, neither Voyager nor the NX had much character either. Same with the Discovery. There's just no romance between the captain and his/her ship anymore ;))
