I don't know maybe destroying entire worlds just isn't my idea of an optimistic future. Sure Discovery probably had some moments. For me all it comes down to is very simple. What I want from Star Trek is to see a world in the future full of exploration and discoveries that makes me want to live in that world. Obviously you have to have conflict to have drama and I get that, but it seems they've focused on making sure that drama can drive action and that just doesn't leave as much room for exploring strange new worlds and fascinating stories that make you think. I'm staying optimistic that one or more of these shows might be what I want out of Star Trek. However retreading old stories versus just following the same formula and doing something new and original doesn't give me full confidence. As MisterPL said we seem to be in a generation of participation trophies and everyone seem to think CBS gets a trophy just for making a show and putting the title "Star Trek" on it. If others are happy with the shows or movies great. What they've been producing lately simply hasn't been for me, if that changes I'll be happy to start enjoying new Star Trek again and gladly pay for my CBS membership. If not I'll continue to collect TOS and TNG era merchandise and enjoy other movies and shows.

#95206 Mego Corporation Revival - Could this mean new Star Trek toys?
Posted by s8film40 on 07 November 2018 - 10:17 AM
At most Targets Mego has lost their endcap and been moved to a small section in the action figure isle. They did this right at the same time as the sale, which I suspect was to help reduce the inventory with the smaller space. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing they just seem to be moving things around in preparation for Christmas. Also they have been adding a new toy section in addition to the regular one. It has some interactive areas (playhouses and large items) they're selling the power wheel and big stuff here as well as an expanded Playmobil and RC section. They seem to be going in a little further with toys probably as a way to capitalize on TRU closing. It'll be interesting to see if this section remains after the holidays, it was originally the book section. If they keep an expanded toy section they may have even more room for collectibles and such.
Also if anyone needs help getting stuff from Target I would be happy to help in anyway I can. I'm at Target all the time as there's one right outside my neighborhood and I stop at other ones while traveling for work.

I'm at a lot of different Targets a lot, so I've been keeping an eye on the Mego displays. They've been adding some new products. While I'm still not really interested in these it's nice to see them putting more stuff out and they're interesting to look at. Here's an update from over the past couple weeks.

Because alien races should all look the same, just like humans all look the same.
Actually from an outsiders perspective humans do all look alike. We all have the same basic shape, features and characteristics. Despite our own beliefs we are all the same color with only varying different shades.
#93567 Toys R Us stores closing down
Posted by s8film40 on 18 March 2018 - 08:29 AM
I have always been a Toys R Us kid! As a kid a trip to TRU was always something I enjoyed and most of my childhood came from that store. Later as I was a "little too old" for toys I began collecting the Playmates line. I still vividly remember calling around to all my local stores for the new Playmates ST line, one finally got it and agreed to have some waiting for me and I went over. I met the guy I talked to on the phone and he went in the back and brought out that first case and opened it. I unfortunately didn't have enough money to buy them all so picked Picard and the Borg as my first two (bad choice, as a spent month looking for Troi after that). Of course back then there was no internet and things weren't revealed and shared months before, so seeing that case opened was like everything from Toy Fair to getting the product in hand all at once. I spent many hours at TRU (especially isle 7-C) pretty much non stop over the years. As I grew older and became a collector it became kind of a meeting spot amongst fellow toy hunters. Now having a son I see TRU from a whole new perspective. Every chance I get when I'm out with him and near a TRU I try to take the opportunity to go. He absolutely loves it! Our most recent trip (hopefully not the last) we spent almost an hour look at and playing with toys. I travel around my area a lot for work and so because I love toys I find myself continually searching for those toys that he's looking for, that's the toy collector in me I guess. I frequent 6 different TRU stores. I will say whoever does their purchasing is a big part of why they're having trouble. They buy in so heavily to certain things and then lack some variety amongst the toy lines. For example we collect the Cars die cast line, after the recent movie it's like they thought everyone was going to go out and buy Lightning McQueen only. They have racks of that one car and none of the rest of the line. Then they are apparently are so out of touch with their own stock they realized they weren't selling and started a 5 for $15 sale. Problem being you can't find five different cars available, no one wants 5 Lightning McQueens. Other big toys that they apparently thought would be huge hits were ordered in massive quantities. The Paw Patrol Sea Patroller is a great toy, but they clearly missed the mark in gauging it's demand.
Of course for me I will always cherish the memories of TRU. What makes me really sad though is knowing that all those future visits with my son as he grows older and explores different types of toys may not happen. It's just not the same going to Target or Walmart and those stores pale in comparison to TRU's selection. We've recently started getting into Playmobile and are still building his Thomas collection those two lines for example are almost completely non existent at Target and Walmart. I'm hopeful that those 200 stores will be saved and fewer stores is possibly a better business model anyways. They can make TRU more of a destination thing that's somewhat more special. If not I hope someone else steps in to fill the void.
#93461 Season 2 of The Orville

I think the only reason Orville is compared to TNG is because it's an episodic space based exploration sci-fi series. Other than that it's really not that similar, it just seems to be such a rare format for a show. The only reason TNG got movies is because there was this kind of expectation that they would follow the same path as TOS, in hindsight I think that was a mistake. I also think it would be a mistake for Orville since they are both using the same format.

Those are the ships the retailers want because they're easier to sell. It's a great place to start a
habitcollection.
How do you start a collection of the same thing over and over. "Here's my shelf with 5 Enterprises these were each released a different year, oh and those are all my Kirks and Picards". This is what's wrong with the Star Trek toy market right now, there's nothing to build momentum it's just a bunch of one off collectibles.
