What an absolutely shitty year. I thought Carrie Fisher was an amazing person, hilarious and seemingly very genuine.

Truly is a shame, after she put all the effort in to get healthier too.

I'm curious how they'll handle her role in episode 9. Unless her character dies in 8, they'd have to do something with her in 9.

I'd prefer them not to kill Leia off screen, and would rather have them do what they did for Cushing in Rogue One or Paul Walker in the Fast and the Furious.

I hate this. Ready for 2016 to come to an end. Surely Death has filled his quota for a while.

2016 started badly and I knew it was gonna end badly. A big loss for the film and art community.

ScreenRant reports that her scenes for Episode 8 have already been filmed, so at least there is some footage to rewrite an exit for her from the series.

Now Debbie Reynolds has died... Jesus 2016 has been brutal.

I feel bad for Carrie'e daughter. Losing both her mother and grandmother so close together.

Anton Yelchin, Ron Glass, and Carrie Fisher... 2016 was a brutal year for celebrities in general, but it seemed to be particularly brutal for artists in Sci–Fi franchises and the music industry. R.I.P. Carrie Fisher, you were truly a funny, witty, amazingly talented person.

Truly is a shame, after she put all the effort in to get healthier too.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they killed Princess Leia off in Episode VIII, nor would I be entirely upset by it depending on how it was done. If done right I think it would be a nice send off to the character, but if done poorly I'd probably wind up hating it. It wouldn't be a terrible idea to write the character out before Episode IX, especially if it could be done in a way that would further the overall story of the films. Rogue One proved Star Wars can still get away with killing major characters while giving them meaningful deaths, which is something that the prequel trilogy sorely lacked. (It had deaths, they just always felt pointless to me.) The real issue with keeping the character alive is audio. Carrie Fisher had a very unique voice, and unless she was recorded phoenetically the way Majel–Barrett Rodenberry was, it would be quite challenging to find someone who could fill her shoes voicing a CGI version of Leia.

Morgan, I could have told you that myself just based on the timeframe for Episode VIII's release. Given that it's due out in a little under a year, filming had to be largely finished by now since it's going to take months worth of post–production to get the film ready for theaters, and production effectively needs to have wrapped for that to happen. I honestly think it wouldn't hurt for Disney to have green screen material in place for all of the major characters so that if a tragedy strikes, they can potentially write those characters out without too much disruption to the series. Think of something along the lines of J. Michael Strazynscki's "trap doors" in Babylon 5 that were used to remove characters whose actors wanted out of the series for an idea of what I'm thinking of.

When Carrie Fisher died I was at work. I found out from a coworker. Another coworker had left for awhile, saw the news, and already having a rotten day, took the rest of the day for himself to watch Episode IV and then see his girlfriend; I don't blame him in the slightest either knowing what he was going through. When Debbie Reynolds died, I was eating dinner with my girlfriend. It's a good thing I didn't have anything in my mouth, because my jaw practically fell open as I blurted out a rather confused, "huh?!" fully expecting to find out that this was some sort of really sick joke. I too felt bad for Carrie Fisher's daughter losing both her mother and grandmother merely days apart. One relative like that is always bad enough, two is outright devastating though.

I had just finished watching Rogue One when my wife turned to me and said she'd overheard a couple in front of us talking about Carrie's death while I was getting refreshments before the film started. In a way I was glad I didn't have that info before I saw the movie but it still made the experience bittersweet.

As for her continuing role as Princess Leia, neither Disney nor Lucasfilm have commented on how this might affect the story. If they kill off Kylo Ren's mother in Episode VIII, it'll be a moot point. If they announce that the film will have to be pushed back to a later release date then we'll know they'll need more time for rewrites (which is what Carrie did for a living as well) and reshoots. It's also possible that they could split her new footage between episodes VIII and IX.

I couldn't help remembering an interview with Mark Hamill after his car accident between the first two films. They wrote in the Wampa scene to explain (poorly) Hamill's reconstructed face. He asked Lucas what he'd have done if he hadn't survived the wreck and Lucas told him he wouldn't recast. He'd have written in Luke's cousin to replace him. So I gotta wonder, what would George do?

What everybody else does....move on. lol! Couldn't resist. But it's true, people die,it's sad,and we move on. Just the way of life I guess. And since she was done with Episode VIII,they can easily change thing things for Episode IX,when they actually start writing and filming it. I'm sure they'll come up with something, just no creepy and fake looking CGI characters please.

I just wanna know what they're gonna do with Chekov if they make another Trek movie. He did have a brother that was killed in some episode or other....Day of the Dove?.....so they could always go that route.
