Picard is what Generations could have been.

Instead of forcing the Next Gen cast into theaters prematurely, they should have learned that absence makes the heart grow fonder. But no, they thought it was simple as putting the TV cast in a film and everything would be super.

Any problems Star Trek: The Motion Picture had were forgiven at the time because it had been ten years since we'd seen these characters in live-action. It wasn't just the first Star Trek film, it was a reunion for fans and their favorite characters.

There's been even more pent-up demand for Picard & company since the dumpster fire that was Nemesis. Yes, a performer of Stewart's caliber has always been an asset, regardless of the material. But a significant part of the success of Picard has to do with fans simply missing seeing these characters on screen. I'm just glad it wasn't a feature film because I still strongly believe Trek's home is episodic television, not film.

The ten episode count was too short for me. A lot of new characters and complex backstory had to be fleshed out (or not). Some things felt rushed and a lot felt unexplored.

One of my predications was that even if there was plot holes or weaker writing... Sir Patick's talent and inclusion would have an elevating effect on the show... so just curious if folks that watched it found that to be true?

I have to tell you that many times I found Picard to just be repeating himself over and over in each episode.  And not in a good way, as what he was repeating was basically "but just trust me we have to do what I'm saying because I'm right and everything will be OK."  There didn't seem to be as much thought put into the dialog as far as proving his point or debating philosophy, it was just relying on everyone to accept that what he was saying was correct and the right thing to do because he was saying it and the show is named after him.  So to answer your question, he did of course elevate it, but not as much as he could have due to poor writing.

The only scenes where he actually moved me were with Data.

I also really wasn't a fan of the episode with Riker & Troi.  It was slow and boring.  I watched Riker take all day to make a tiny pizza.  They could have spiced that whole reunion up a lot more.  It was much more fun to see him appear for a few seconds of screen time at the end, than in that entire episode.  Troi is pretty boring to begin with, not Marina's fault, just the character, but if they insisted on having her there they should have made her more integral to the plot than performing some brief pop-psychology on a "synth".  As it was it clearly felt like "welp, Riker's here, so Troi must be here too...I guess?"

Riker and Troi are married and seem to have a daughter.

I can understand why there wasn't much in the way of Picard having to constantly explain and debate to every member of his new crew, episode after episode, why they should follow him. First off, it'd be redundant and critics would moan about that. But in the context of the show, most of these people already know Picard well enough to know better.

Then there are those who have their own agendas regardless of what he says. Agnes was on a covert mission. Raffi was hitching a ride to see her estranged son. Hell, Elnor was there specifically because he believed it was a lost cause.

I was glad to see Riker and Troi were still together and that they had children. Anyone looking for hope in contemporary Star Trek can find it right there. Seeing Troi greet Jean-Luc and then immediately sense his condition... well, let's just say I fully appreciated what Sirtis brought to that scene. I agree with Whirlygig; she could use more material.

I see my local library has a couple copies of Picard S1 now... so I'll finally be able to watch it.

So...  S2E1...  Yay?  Nay?

On a scale of 1-10 I was at about a 6 or 7.

I liked it more than season 1, hopefully it can hold its improvement in quality.

Also loved seeing some STO ships on screen, the devs must be thrilled. I think this is the first time game ships have been canonized.

We enjoyed it. My daughter has a limited knowledge of TNG but apparently enough to get excited when she saw the Stargazer, Guinan, and Q (we met John de Lancie at BronyCon). Looking forward to the rest of the season!

Really liking where this is going! The Stargazer is awesome, inside and out.

I might be in the minority but I am not a fan of the STO ships. It is cool to bring in visual references that many fans love though. Just not for me. I was really hoping one of the ships in the fleet was a Galaxy class but it was a different class.

I also felt Guinans scene was off. She normally illuminates some key part of the story or helps another characters journey. It felt like a catch up scene which isnt how she has been used in the past. If Picard had given her a little bit of his family issues that would have made sense. Maybe we will see more of her.

Someone I know is serving on the editing team for season 3 and says that it is really good. The only tease I allowed him to give me was that the show runner is a big fan of the Kirk era films. So maybe this means we will see elements from those stories. Really bummed this will only have 3 seasons but maybe characters will be seen in future spin-offs.

Im not a big fan of the Ross or Sutherland, the Reliant Im meh about.

But I love the Gagarin, I think its one of STOs best ship designs.

I think it was a little silly how they felt they *had* to give both Guinan and Q an immediate line explaining their aged appearances.  I know we have fellow members of the fanbase who are so nitpicky that they NEED that answered or they will assault the quality of the show, but for both of those characters one could easily imagine their own answers to that question.  It's kind of silly to think that Guinan would feel "peer pressured" by humans into aging, when she wasn't bothered while tooling around with Samuel Clemens.

It's also a little silly to me how the cast is all shoehorned back in together.  Some of the characters from the first season maybe shouldn't have a part in season 2.  They never really gelled as an actual crew to me, anyway.  I feel the inclusion of all of them will force some contrivances on the plot.  I get it, they had contracts...maybe they shouldn't have.

Spoiler

These silly things aside, I'm still in.

I think the father issues make sense. That seemed to be a common thread in Trek with Sarek/Spock, Riker and his dad, Tom Paris and the admiral. Belannas dad was also a jerk to her.

I felt the same way about the TOS films. I was so relieved when one of the bridge officers finally made it off the Enterprise in TWOK but they still managed to have him discover Khan. (The ONE character who wasn't in "Space Seed!") The rest are all teachers? Please.

In Belanna’s case it was her Federation citizen human dad that was disappointed in how Klingon she turned out to be. I can only imagine what that type of parental rejection does to a young child. Worf was also a pretty bad dad. There were all kinds of human conflict in the earlier Trek series. The way things were shown or not shown was different.

I think that is why I lean more towards DS9. They wanted to explore situations that they could not do in TNG and VOY. Really a missed opportunity to have the Maquis in Starfleet uniforms by episode 2 of VOY. There could have been a lot of great drama to mine getting the two crews adjusted.

Few fans seemed to enjoy Into Darkness as an unnecessary remake of The Wrath of Khan.

How are Trekkies enjoying this season's take on The Voyage Home? (I'm waiting for George & Gracie to show up but they're already in the 23rd century.)

One additional comment -- this season isn't just trying to remake TVH.

It's trying to remake every time travel episode/movie (particularly ones which have characters becoming entangled in some sort of social issue of the time) all at once, from TVH to City on the Edge of Forever to All Good Things to First Contact, etc, etc.  And remix as much TNG nostalgia as possible in the process (Q!  Guinan!  Borg Queen!)...  When you try to do so many things at once, well, they ain't Superman.
