Yes, I mean, anything would really be better than "there's fungus existing on some mumbo jumbo plane of existence in space with gigantic invisible root networks that are somehow traversable by normal matter but only if you have some of that DNA within your body and then if you do you can just choose where to go at will even though I don't think that root system has a central nervous system and wait a minute what's that you say, space is so vast and full of nothingness by its very definition that even the idea of a bussard collector finding enough particles to do anything with is a giant stretch oh well no matter SPORES EVERYWHERE"...
I would have MUCH prefered an experimental Transwarp thing. Since we already accepted warp, I'd much rather build on/around that than invent something else in left field. Warp is part of canon. It doesn't have to be real to be part of canon, but if you are going to stuff something new into canon your first duty is to see if you can't maybe make that thing be both respectful of the pre-existing canon and also more in line with the current scientific thinking if at all possible.
There's a lot of buzz right now about gravitational waves. Use *that* in your mumbo jumbo. Use what Gothneo said. Use anything other than "magic mushrooms", for the love of Pete.
