That's 3 places for getting captured, interrogated and put in a wheel chair by the alien enemy! Imagine how many more he would have skipped if he wasn't captured laugh.gif

Here's a question though, would they refer to a fleet Capt as Captain? Does a fleet captain still command a ship? I guess I'm wondering if Pike could have been a fleet captain? If so he'd have only jumped 2 ranks.

Has anyone read the comic and know if that explains some of Nero's backstory? I flipped through it and was surprised to see TNG crew in it. I might pick this up and see if it sheds any light. I didn't even notice the Klingon boots to be honest. I guess I'll pay attention when I go see this at the IMAX on Friday or Saturday.

Ive been a member of Starfleet Command since 92. When it was first dreamed up by two guys in Texas back in 1974, it was based on examples from TOS. So.....our version of it is very similar to this one. http://memory-alpha....i/Fleet_captain he could have been a Fleet Captain in this movie, but in TOS he was called Fleet Captain.

Ah who knows, LOL as my wife said "Mark it's a movie!!"

Anyone here wonder if maybe Vulcan wasn't destroyed but merely sucked into the blackhole and into another universe or time? Hey this is Star Trek and as Spock once said, "There are always possibilities." Could make for interesting stories in the future.

It was pretty clear that Vulcan was destroyed. Anyone know when the novelization of the movie will be out? I understand that Alan Dean Foster is writing it. It is odd that its not out already, movie novelizations are usually out before the movie is out.

EDIT: just found out, its tommorrow!!

As far as ranks, starting on DS9, it seemed they were trying to use modern US Naval rank structure so there would have been no more fleet captains or commodores. Perhaps that has carried into the new movie as well.

Also, keep in mind this is an alternate reality, so the old TOS rank structure might also be nullified by that fact.

While anything is possible in the world of sci-fi, it did look like Vulcan had broken apart. So, even if it was sucked into another universe or time, it probably would have reappeared as space rubble. And certainly there would have been no survivors. At the most, someone somehere got a new asteroid field.

Okay guys, opposite corners. Let's keep this civil. I think Donster was just kidding around, hence the SNL clip. Let's not let a simple joke start any trouble.

Well, that would certainly be avant garde. So, in a way, it would be amazing, in an artistic sense. wink.gif

Sorry, just have to check, you mean un-biased right?

Also... I though the point was to discuss the film? Doesn't that mean we are going to have to pick it apart? Analyze it? I've always found that to be the fun of a true "Thinker" of a movie! I'm surely not trying to ruin anyone's enjoyment of the film. I've been trying to evenly throw out crits as well as praise for it...

And yes, I echo Knightone, please, lets keep it civil!

Sadly that goes to my previous point that a couple of folks on this board don't want to hear anything that doesn't proclaim that this is simply the best movie EVER. If someone mentions otherwise or want to bring up points of debate asking a very simply question of Why or that doesn't make sense their vulcan ears flip right off of their real ones. Unfortunate since I've been pretty open minded about most things. I didn't love Enterprise but found that it had some pluses especially its last season. If that had been the first season we would of probably of had 7 seasons of the show but that was only after Manny Coto came on board.

Regardless as JMW used in an attempt to be clever in ending one of his posts "Some People..." well let me finish that sentence. Some people only can take it when things are going their way. So I'm going to continue to comment on things I didn't like about this movie. Why? Because A- I want to and B- If my argument is so persuasive and can "ruin" someone's opinion or enjoyment of the movie then maybe it wasn't that great of a movie to start off with.

Dav, you've got to lighten up man. You are taking this waay too serious and that's honestly unfortunate. We all are at difference of opinion on the matter and as Gothneo reminded us, that's what the forum is for, to discuss things. Trust me, you haven't ruined the experience for me, I'm going to see it again this weekend in a IMAX theater biggrin.gif So let's stop making this personal and get back to discussing how much we loved or hated the movie. This is no different than when TNG hit the air waves and we, as TOS fans threw up our hands in protest. As time went by though, I actually grew to love it and some of the other shows that followed. Hopefully this might be the case for you down the road. I sure hope so, as this, I think is our first difference of opinion(?).

Back on topic, WOW VF, the novelization doesn't hit until tomorrow? I wonder if they did something similiar when the Star Wars prequels came out, which could be why they released it later? I might pick it up and give it a read. How much is is selling for?

Countdown does a pretty thorough job of filling in Nero's motivation. I mean, some people still don't seem to be satisfied but I was happy with it. Plus I thought it had some of the best art in a Star Trek comic in a long time. It's a very quick read but I actually read the series online via download because the shops were always running out of issues and I STILL bought the trade because I enjoyed it so much.

As for the movie itself, I have to say I embraced this crew whole-heartedly. The first Trek movie I saw on the big screen was Star Trek V (what luck, I know) when I was 8. I'd just gotten into TNG. Even back then I was a little disappointed with it. I have seen all the movies since then and I have to say this was the happiest I've ever been with a Star Trek movie. I refuse to be bogged down in all the minute details and I refuse to care about "canon" because that stuff gets SO boring. I loved all the little in-jokes for Trekkies and the pace was fantastic! I'd love to see this crew go on more adventures for years to come. I was surprised about how moved I was at certain points in the film. I hope the future installments are free of any of the original crew or time travel. And please don't bring back Khan. He was great in II but that was a revenge flick. You can't have a revenge flick when characters first meet unless you want to repeat the plotline of the first movie. I say go in all-new territory.

I'd love to see a movie where the Enterprise has to go to several planets to uncover some sort of secret and we get some awesome realizations of other planets and cities full of aliens and Gorn! I want some awesome Gorn! I hope now that the origin is done they can focus more on plot next time and really expand the universe they only hinted at in this movie.

Myself, I put a caveat on sci-fi... at some point it stops being Science Fiction and is either just Fiction, or is more Fantasy. For me there is a difference in the genres! So I don't accept that anything is possible in my Sci-Fi! Really good Sci-fi, should at least be plausable IMO.

For example, AFI rates "A clock work orange" as one of the best 10 Sci-Fi Movies of all times, yet to me it's really a suspense/thriller, and IMDB seems to agree with that as it doesn't tag it as Sci-Fi at all...

But, again, it's an example of how things can have different meaning for people.

Dave, much like topics on Politics or Religion, you are not going to change anyone's mind. To be honest with you, most will rebel against your posting over and over again to yell they liked it even more even if they didn't care for it. I'm just being honest with you about that. Every single Trek had HUGE holes in them. I could take them apart one by one. They're so many holes in the the TV shows they write blooper books. I liked Nemesis a great deal even though I could set and list a few dozen huge holes in it. ST XI was a darn good movie. Was it Citizen Kane? Ahhh no.

FYI Slayer has the right to slam the thread shut anytime that he gets tired of coming back in here and breaking up the fighting so, I would take his advice and just ignore any post that you don't like.

I was not one for the countdown series. Sadly it did fill in a lot of backstory that really should have been added to actual film. Im sure Nero and the Romulans confused a lot of the audiance as to why they were doing stuff. What I dont want to see with this franchise is what happens with movies like Spiderman....Star Trek 2 is going to be the klingons, gorn, and cardassians....Trek 3 is going to etc. I can totally see them trying to stuff multiple cameos/villians into one film just to do it without and major bearing on the story.

You know... it would have made for some really interesting plot devices had Nero destroyed Earth as well as vulcan... you know ala ENT "Twilight"...

...Then again, that does ring of "Firefly" now doesn't it!

Star Trek has on many occasions broken the barrier of plausibility for dramatic purposes. A lot of other sci-fi franchises have as well. I always give Trek and some other franchises a little room in that regard as they at least try and stay within the boundaries of science when possible. But story always comes first as it has to be entertaining first and foremost. While this Trek movie didn't seem to have any scientific regard at all, I'm still giving it some leeway as they were able to make a very entertaining movie. No if they had the characters using magic powers (i.e. the force) or they had been humans that didnt originate on Earth, but from a far off galaxy, then I would have to fullly categorize it as fantasy. As it is, though, it is at least grounded on the basis that these people and their technology stems from our modern world.

But yes, anything is possible in the world of sci-fi, if the writer deems it necessary to create dramatic tension or to have an engaging plot device even if it flies in the face of current scientific knowledge. Is it right for them to do that? Only if they succeded in entertaining you and drawing your interest.

I'm not trying to argue or change your mind Knightone. All I'm saying is I put boundaries on what I call Sci-Fi. I'm not even making a statement about if this new movie breaches what I think are those bounds or not. I dissent from you with respect that anything is (or should) be possible in a sci-fi genre. That's all!

I don't mean to derail this thread from talking about the movie, so I'll leave it at that.

I won't waste everyone's time going on and on about what I didn't like about this film. I am simply grateful that Star Trek is still alive and going. I was glad to see Nimoy involved and enjoyed the performances of Quinto, Pine, Urban and Pegg especially. I hope the best for this new crew and the sequels that are sure to follow.

This is the first time that we have a somewhat "all-star" cast and I wonder if this group will stick through thick and thin like the other crews have in the past?
